Abstract

This master's thesis deals with the improvement of visual notations of graphical modeling languages used for business process management. In order to enable a graphical representation to communicate effectively and facilitate the design of business processes, the way of human mind processing should be taken in account. Stephen Kosslyn and Daniel L. Moody have elaborated several design principles for cognitively effective visual notations and displays. The design of visual notations is often taken a little too lightly, although the notation does have a strong influence on the speed, ease and accuracy of the processing. Current state of the art representations will be examined considering these design principles and suggestions on the improvement will be given. Finally, a new concrete syntax will be suggested and compared to the current state of art representations.
