From Student to IT Executive – With TU Berlin as a Software Campus Partner

The Database Systems and Information Management (DIMA) Group at TU Berlin supports students in their preparation for leadership positions in the information technology industry via the Software Campus Program.

Since 2011 the Software Campus Program (SCP) has trained dozens of Master’s and PhD students in computer science and related fields to become managers in the information technology (IT) industry. With funding of up to 100,000 € from the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), awardees are afforded the opportunity to receive mentorship, obtain leadership training, and develop their management skills, in conjunction with a university research partner and an industry partner. Over the past decade, TU Berlin students who have partnered with DIMA have developed technical expertise, leveraged our network of industry partners (e.g., SAP, Siemens, Huawei, Trumpf), and benefited from our modern computing infrastructure.

To be eligible to apply to the SCP, students must be currently pursuing a Master's or a PhD at a Software Campus partner university (e.g., TU Berlin) and have a record of outstanding academic achievement. The registration process requires applicants to submit several documents. In particular, a project proposal of their own design in line with their academic partner’s (e.g., DIMA’s) strategic research agenda as well as a personality and intelligence test. These documents are uploaded to the Software Campus website, which is followed by a pre-selection process, where select candidates are interviewed by university and IT industry representatives. Finally, a steering committee comprised of Software Campus partners decides who will be accepted into the program.

To date, ten students have successfully participated in the SCP under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Volker Markl and DIMA team members.

Testimonials from Software Campus awardees affiliated with the DIMA Group

“DIMA has and continues to support me in varying ways. Martin Kiefer and Jonas Traub helped me during the application process. Juan Soto helped me to identify students with the right technical skills required to work on my project. In addition, technical discussions with Kaustubh Beedkar, Jorge Quiané Ruiz, and Philipp Grulich over many occasions helped me to improve my research. For all of these reasons, DIMA offers a great research environment.”

Rudi Poepsel Lemaitre, TU Berlin Computer Science Master’s Student

“DIMA team members, including PhD students, Postdoctoral Researcher Steffen Zeuch, and Prof. Dr. Volker Markl supported me throughout the SCP application process. With their assistance, I was well-prepared for my interviews. They have set me up for success.”

Moritz Ruge, TU Berlin Computer Science Master’s Student

“Software Campus is very important for my career development. It enables me to improve my management and leadership skills and expand my professional network.

Philipp Grulich, TU Berlin Computer Science PhD Student
