Prof. Volker Markl named 2020 ACM Fellow [1]

The Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), the largest and oldest international association of computer scientists, has named Prof. Dr. Volker Markl, Co-Director of the Berlin Institute for the Foundations of Learning and Data (BIFOLD), Head of the Department of Database Systems and Information Management (DIMA) at TU Berlin and Head of Intelligent Analytics for Massive Data (IAM) at the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence as ACM Fellow 2020. Less than one percent of all worldwide ACM members are recognized as ACM Fellows for their outstanding achievements each year since 1993. The paper "Towards Resilient Data Management for the Internet of Moving Things" by Elena Beatriz Ouro Paz, Eleni Tzirita Zacharatou and Volker Markl was accepted for presentation at the 19. Fachtagung für Datenbanksysteme für Business, Technologie und Web (BTW 2021) on September 20 - 24, 2021. The paper "Parallelizing Intra-Window Join on Multicores: An Experimental Study" by Shuhao Zhang, Yancan Mao, Jiong He, Philipp Grulich, Steffen Zeuch, Bingsheng He, Richard Ma and Volker Markl was accepted for presentation at the ACM SIGMOD/PODS International Conference on Management of Data (SIGMOD/PODS 2021), which will take place from June 20 - 25, 2021 in Xi'an, China. A vision paper by researchers of the Database Systems and Information Management group (DIMA) at TU Berlin and the Intelligent Analytics for Massive Data (IAM) group at DFKI was accepted for publication in SIGMOD Record. Major Extension of the EDBT 2019 Best Paper by TU Berlin and DFKI Researchers Accepted for Publication in TODS [13]

The paper "Scotty: General and Efficient Open-Source Window Aggregation for Stream Processing Systems" by J. Traub et al. was accepted for publication at ACM Transactions on Database Systems (TODS). This extended journal paper is a major extension of the EDBT best paper titled Efficient "Window Aggregation with General Stream Slicing" from 2019 by the same authors from the DIMA group and the Intelligent Analytics for Massive Data (IAM) group at DFKI. TU Berlin's student Hendrik Makait reached the 2nd place at the ACM SIGMOD 2020 Student Research Competition at the 2020 ACM SIGMOD/PODS International Conference on the Management of Data with his paper "Rethinking Message Brokers on RDMA and NVM". TU Berlin & DFKI Database Systems Researchers Receive SIGMOD 2020 Best Paper Award [33]

Database systems researchers at TU Berlin and DFKI were highly successful this year. Four of their papers were accepted at the 2020 ACM SIGMOD/PODS International Conference on the Management of Data. And, in particular, one of the paper’s received the 2020 ACM SIGMOD Best Paper Award. Dr. Zoi Kaoudi, a Sr. Researcher at TU Berlin’s DIMA Group and DFKI’s IAM Group gave a talk on “ML-based Cross-Platform Query Optimization” at the 36th IEEE International Conference on Data Engineering (ICDE 2020). Researchers from TU Berlin’s Database Systems and Information Management (DIMA) Group and Big Data Management (BigDaMa) Group as well as DFKI’s Intelligent Analytics for Massive Data (IAM) Group offered presentations on their latest research at the 10th Biennial Conference on Innovative Data Systems Research (CIDR) 2020 held between January 12th through January 15th in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. CIDR is a systems-oriented conference, emphasizing the systems architecture perspective. Historically, the biennial conference begun in 2003 was always held in Asilomar, California (USA). The Berlin Big Data Center (BBDC) and the Berlin Center for Machine Learning (BZML) will merge into the newly established Berlin Center for the Foundations of Learning and Data (BIFOLD). On 15 January 2020, Prof. Dr. Volker Markl (Director of BBDC and Chair of the DIMA group at TU Berlin) and Prof. Dr. Klaus-Robert Müller (Director of BZML and Chair of the Machine Learning Group at TU Berlin) announced the new AI Competence Center BIFOLD. The annual Software Campus Summit (SCS) enables awardees and industry partners to meet and discuss their research projects. This year, the two-day event took place in Munich and offered get-togethers, poster presentations, invited keynote speakers, and a science slam championship. In attendance were Sergey Redyuk (who is about to launch Project DORIAN), Rudi Poepsel Lemaitre (who is currently working on Project EDADS), and Jonas Traub (who completed Project SENSE).
