TU Berlin Data Science Bachelor’s Thesis Garners a 2014 Fujitsu NEXT e. V. Big Data Award

André Hacker garnered a 2014 Fujitsu NEXT e. V. Big Data Award for his Bachelor’s Thesis on “Evaluating Parallel Data Processing Systems for Scalable Feature Selection”, conducted in the Technische Universität Berlin Database Systems and Information Management (DIMA) Group, headed by Prof. Dr. Volker Markl, under the supervision of Ph.D. students, Alexander Alexandrov and Christoph Boden. At the Third Annual Awards Ceremony, held on November 17, 2014 in Munich, Germany, André not only received a big data award, he also won a 5000 € special cash prize.

In his thesis, André implemented a scalable algorithm for feature selection (an important step in machine learning) in both Stratosphere (today, known as Apache Flink – flink.incubator.apache.org) and Hadoop, two open source big data analytics platforms. Additionally, he conducted a comprehensive quantitative and qualitative evaluation of his solution. His award not only recognizes the importance of big data as a “hot topic” and André’s scientific contributions to the Apache Flink incubator project, but is also a testament to the innovation and academic excellence of researchers in the TU Berlin DIMA Group.

Founded in 2010, the Fujitsu NEXT – Network of Experts e.V. Association, currently comprised of nine German companies, monitors emerging trends in IT and regularly hosts activities to increase the expertise of its members. Additionally, it has established an awards program to support talented young scientists.

Established in June 2008, the TU Berlin DIMA Group leads prestigious research initiatives, including Stratosphere (stratosphere.eu) and the Berlin Big Data Center (www.bbdc.berlin), among others.
